SWORD PRACTICE ON THE MAINE

Sword Training
(Photograph by E. H. Hart)

"Some of the boys on the Maine were very skillful with the weapons, and the survivors of the unlooked-for destruction of the battleship will probably draw a simile from the words of Cowper:

'No skill in swordsmanship, however just,
Can be secure against a madman's thrust.'

So with the loss of the Maine. It was not destroyed in fair fight, but by the mad act of a criminal " - Johnston
